Regular weeding, feeding and mowing from late spring to early autumn is important to maintain a healthy, durable and pleasant looking lawn.

Care of lawn edges can really add the finishing touch to both the lawn and flower borders.

Before and after of a cottage garden in Luddenden that has heavy family use, regular mowing and application of a high nitrogen fertiliser during spring and summer results in strong green growth, followed by autumn scarifying and application of a winter weed and feed.

Autumn is a time to get the lawn ready for the following year. If required, application of an iron sulphate moss killer will turn mossy areas black within a couple of weeks. The lawn can then be scarified to remove the moss and dead thatch and allow light, moisture and nutrients into the soil. Initially the lawn will look unkempt but will recover and look better for it. Applying a slow release fertiliser high in potash and phosphates will encourage root growth and strengthen the grass ready for the following year.
